kids, as you get ready for your summer break, consider using it to convince your favorite musicians to join the fediverse. thank.

In case you're worried about fakery and spoofs, we are working on a system.

We will know it 'is' them and not a sock puppet as they will have the official Fediverse barcode laser etched on their forehead which activates their browser and login, via their laptop camera.

It's the only way to maintain credibility.

It hasn't got to be their head, it could be any part of their body that they are happy to point at an on-line camera.

Although we may have a potential issue with Iggy Pop.

I'll get legal onto it asap.

Related thought: are there any Mastodon instances dedicated to music? And if so, do they support audio-only uploads?

(Checking joinmastodon.com, I see instances for *discussing* music, but -- at a glance, anyway -- nothing for people who *create* music.)

@djsundog @woozle I would be interested in this too, though not currently in a position to start my own instance

@woozle @djsundog

I don't know of a mastodon instance for that, but
there's peertube for video uploads, and funkwhale for audio uploads :)

Let me know if you want upload privileges on our funkwhale !

@gled @djsundog So PeerTube only does video?

I hadn't heard of FunkWhale -- I am intrigued!

(Found this: funkwhale.audio/)

@gled @djsundog

...and yes, I think I would like upload privs, if only to try it out. ^.^

@woozle @djsundog yes, music.pawoo.net does that. I'm not sure how the audio-only uploads work or federate, I suspect they might be converting to a video after you upload it.

@woozle @djsundog I was curious so I checked - the music uploads there don't federate the media directly, instead it's just a link - but it has a preview card with an embedded player.

@0x1C3B00DA @djsundog

That's a PeerTube instance -- I don't think it federates with Mastodon, does it?

@woozle @djsundog
Yea PeerTube instances can federate with mastodon instances. You can follow users there. Videos they post will show up on your timeline and your responses are listed as comments on the video

@0x1C3B00DA @djsundog

This I did not know!

How do you get a user's URL, so as to find them on Mastodon?

@woozle @djsundog I don't know about the URL, but you can get their handle the same way as on mastodon, username@domain
