DJ Sundog - from the toot-lab @djsundog

hey I created one of those polls!

Should mastodon whitelist the html tag for inclusion in posts?

7 yeah to 0 nah so far which means gargamel is sleeping

@djsundog i think my stance is either
- nah because audio would be better implemented as an Attachment than in the post body
- sure but it should ensure that the `autoplay` attribute is ABSENT and the `preload` attribute is NONE

there are valid arguments for either probably

@kibi I am anti-autoplay for all media in all of circumstances and anti-preload for most circumstances and would be fine with audio as attachments if masto rendered and player for attachments

@djsundog all you need is to modify the code to allow .mp4s and .webms with no video track and you're most of the way there tbh

@djsundog (right now if you upload an mp4 with only audio it gives a 500 internal server error so presumably it requires a video feed right now)

@djsundog however, it had no problem with this

[archive.org/details/Sneeuwland; i ran the .mp3 through `ffmpeg -i audio.mp3 audio.mp4` and that's all]

@kibi yeah, I'm just trying to get upstream to put any sort of audio handling in at all. anything that requires users to utter ffmpeg is a non-feature.

@djsundog right, what i'm getting at is:

1. MP4 (used for video) is also the most common container for AAC audio (often with extension M4A but it's the same container); it's the same format just without a video stream
2. In HTML, <video> tags can be used for *either* video or audio

so if we just enabled MP3 uploads and allowed users to upload audio-only M4As, we could *call* those files "videos" and they would probably play fine as audio streams with very little additional modification

@djsundog the *only* thing keeping people from uploading AAC m4a files as audio right now and sharing them is, as far as I can tell:

1. Mastodon doesn't recognize m4a as an mp4 extension
2. Mastodon requires all video files to have a video stream, apparently

If we removed those restrictions then we'd basically already have audio support I think? And then we'd just need to enable MP3s as well

@djsundog Only if everybody who uses it CW's it and it can somehow be set to nevee ever autoplay. (I voted no because I don't think those two things can be guaranteed)

@djsundog

servers can blacklist tags globally? what about per account?
