An instance that encourages similarly minded instances to spring up around it as a hub by offering a subdomain to anyone who wants to set up a federated instance.
(This is not what I registered a domain for a minute ago)
@djsundog I pondered whether I should try to farm out sub domains of toote.rs
@jec I had actually wondered how many classes of toote.rs would spring from the headwaters of the nice.toote.rs ;)
@GinnyMcQueen @djsundog I would really like to be able to build a larger network of toote.rs but I have no clue how to manage it. I'm open to ideas!
@jec @GinnyMcQueen theoretically, one could write a webapp that fiddled your dns records via your providers api or what have you, and could be restricted to requiring a code or an account on your instance or whatever, but it's tricky to expose that layer of "your homestead" to the outside world any more than it is by default without handing over the keys to the entire world. Not something to undertake lightly, but could do one-off dns records for a small group by hand.
@GinnyMcQueen @jec I left the extra character at the end as a space to breathe.
@djsundog @GinnyMcQueen At this point, I have no local community to speak of on nice.toote.rs. I got a few personal friends to create accounts here but they aren't active.
If anyone out there wants to come be nice with me, let me know and I'll temporarily open regs.
@djsundog i would definitely do this but i don't think anyone else wants an instance like mine π
@bea you'd be surprised ;)
This is also a decent model for, say, regional instances of a larger national/international community - y'know, like we already do everywhere else.
