DJ Sundog - from the toot-lab @djsundog

Folks worrying about instances just up and shutting down because someone got in over their head don't understand how many BBSes I opened and closed over the years.

It'll happen. It's not the end of the world. It does suck. It doesn't suck forever unless you give up.

If an instance you're on closes shop, you can and will find another if you want one. Go easy on the poor soul who had to end a dream.

@djsundog maybe a handy script for backing up your posts and follows?

@rabcyr definitely want to look at an easy-to-use bundle of user data like that

@rabcyr now you get me thinking about it, every user has an Atom feed, wonder if your personal one has /all/ your toots

@djsundog oh i think that's a feature already, just need to cron it

@djsundog Hell, I had a friend who was running a dial-up BBS at night unbeknownst to his parents and we had a rocking Solar Realms Elite game on it until his folks took away his PC

@lmorchard my first bbs went down when my parents found out I'd been syncing messages long-distance to MN from NY for an hour every night at 3am ;)

@lmorchard shit was pricey back in the day 😁 got me interested in 2600 though... ;)

@lmorchard @djsundog Shit, most of my college spending money was spent on LD calls to Ohio to "network" my BBS.

@djsundog Any advice for said admin who gets in over their head? lol

.@marykatefain

My book, the best move any admin finding themselves under water can do is call out.

Every admin on the net has people who want them to succeed and be happy about it. Letting folks know what the situation really is at any given point helps manage expectations and allows for others to offer to pitch in.

This stuff is complex both tech wise and community building and management wise. It really does take a village.

@djsundog Thanks! So far we've had good luck with responses on github issues :) Are there lots of developers on here?

@marykatefain I know of a couple hundred who've joined over the last week (holy crap, I just started coming here a week ago) so, yeah, I'd imagine there'll be enough dev resources to go around eventually ;)

@djsundog
Is a built-in "migrate" function possible, ie can I backup and load to a different server if a I shut down?

@djsundog Also if you're a journo/band/foo and want to get a stable presence, it's really not that expensive to get someone to set one up for you, with closed registration to folks you want on there.

@djsundog And MOOs/MUDs. Hated losing a character because the person who created the whole thing graduated.
