One step closer: the issue booting seems to be the 16 GB CF cards I purchased - using a (too small for the full root fs) 64 MB CF card it found /dev/hda2 just fine
So now I have to find some mid-size CF cards it likes
Feel like it's my moral duty to get this crusty old Linux build running on this crusty old hardware so I can put up a web page with some working info all in one place and then make archive dot org devour it.
@gcupc not sure yet tbh - the 64 MB card that worked and the 16 GB card(s) that didn't were both made by SanDisk - figure Illinois pick up a couple from the stuck-in-the-past drugstore tomorrow after work and see what works and what doesn't, but if none of em worked I might come knocking on your door ;)
The one I was thinking of turned out to be 8GB, but I'll check my to-recycle box tomorrow.
